Takapuna Beach Cup – Stars align for Bhutty Boys

The Takapuna Beach Cup 2015 attracted a host of paddlers from all over the world, including top paddlers from Tahiti and Hawaii in exciting match ups throughout the weekend.  Indeed the level of paddling on display was world class and conditions built to the penultimate 42km marathon around Rangitoto on Saturday.

Team Vaka Manu looking to repeat the success of 2014 with an up and coming crew, Team Pineula hoping to reclaim their title and the Bhutty Boys hoping to revive the achievements of Team Goodyear which featured many of their more experienced paddlers in days past.

We were pleased to see our crews and team riders being key parts of their crews.  Joining Team Pineula were two of Tahiti’s top paddlers, Georges Cronsteadt and Steeve Teihotata, hoping to help bring the win for Jeff, Kingi and the boys.  Unfortunately, a broken ama sunk the crews chances of a reclaim out the back of Rangitoto turning into the main surf run and a long tow back to shore left the team disappointed with the day.

Team Vaka Manu pushed valiantly, with a huli spoiling the good run, on recovery, the crew made up ground to finish third.  Not the result they hoped for, but a good build for the future with their young crew.

Tupuria King finished in second place with Herberts on Tour, featuring Hawaiian’s Luke Evislin, Makana Denton and Mario Mausino.  Luke showing his supreme downwind steering skills, catching bump after bump into the finish.

Bhutty Boys took a well deserved first place finish, featuring team riders, Ash Roozendaal and Josh Walters, the crew made a solid start and showed that they had done the work over the summer to excel in the choppy and surf conditions.

Team riders and crews featured on the podium throughout the weekend, including the Tui Tonga Mixed Crew taking out the Mixed Division.

Everyone is looking forward to next year to do it all again!

James Bhutty Moore-morial Race 2015

The first solo long distance race of the year,  the James Bhutty Mooremorial Race or Champions Cup was held in the beautiful Mount Maunganui. The premier ocean race on the OC1 and Surfski calendar, the seventh running of the event brought 117 paddlers to the start line.

This year, we were stoked to be a major sponsor of the event, and with a field that included the top Australian OC1 paddlers and NZ’s top Surfski paddlers, there were some points to prove out on the water. A clash of events saw only a few SUPs in the field, but with Armie Armstrong amongst them, it wasn’t lacking in status.

Conditions were very flat, and it became a test of stamina and skill, pitting the mental against the physical.

Team Strongarm riders, Marcel Hellesoe, Ash Roosendaal, Josh Walters, and Jeff performed well out on the water, with Tupuria King delivering another dominant performance to win by a substantial margin.  The win imagequalifying for a trip to the 2015 Aussie Long Distance Nationals later this year.

Thanks to Paul and Troy for putting on a well run event.

We have event shirts available in the shop, with part of the profit going to the event organisers to ensure the race continues to be held into the future.imageimage
