Team Tonga Va’a

Outrigger Canoeing is experiencing a revival in the Kingdom of Tonga. The Nuku’alofa Outrigger Canoe Club have been leading this from the front. A group of twelve paddlers have been selected and are training to compete at the South Pacific Mini Games being held at Wallis & Futuna, the first time Tonga will enter the Va’a competition.
Team Tonga Va’a consists of a group of novice paddlers, who have come a long way in the time that they have had in the canoe. Coached by Owen Pauu, and well supported by Mark Gerard and Salesi Fineanganofo, the crews are in their final preparations for the Games in September 2013.
I have been privileged to spend the past two weeks training with the boys, they’ve got plenty of power and are keen to represent Tonga.
Strongarm will be providing the official Team Tonga Va’a race shirts and caps, as our contribution to their cause. We’ve also been glad to supply gear for their fundraising efforts. We wish them all the best in September!
