The Nuku’alofa Outrigger Canoe Club sent a team of paddlers from Tonga to compete in the Ace Race 2012. An annual 25km race from Panmure Wharf to Birkenhead Wharf, a deceptively challenging race as you can guarantee paddling half the race against the strong tidal flow of the Waitemata Harbour.
Led by Owen Pauu, an experienced paddler who returned to Tonga to rekindle the sport of Outrigger in the island Kingdom, the NOCC crew included Team Strongarm paddlers Mafua Teaupa and Kiko Leone. Charles Nepia, Strongarm Director, and a founding member of NOCC, also joined the crew. The boys from Tonga had a couple of days to get used to the cold water, and the excitement of the big city.
Strongarm is proud to have been able to provide some teamwear for the NOCC team (Kingdom 6ers). The crew raced really well and with a crew of mostly novices, they got a real taste of the competition and got some great experience to take back to Tonga.
